OK, I’ll start off by saying – yes, I’ve had an eating disorder. But that’s not what this blog is about. This blog is about discovering new foods, and enjoying life! My anorexia defined me for two years, and I don’t want it to define me any more – it’s in the past. Chapter closed!! But for those of you that are interested, this is my eating story:
When I was a (younger) teenager, I used to eat terribly, living off chocolate, crisps, chips, burgers…no vegetables to speak of! I did very little exercise other than riding, and was not particuarly healthy. However during my last few years in High School, I developed an eating disorder and went the complete opposite way. It started with just eating a little healthier, cutting out the junk, doing a bit more exercise. By the time I was 17, I was dangerously underweight; undereating and overexercisng because I felt I had too, not for enjoyment. I was not happy at High School and was very insecure, and food was the one thing I could control. Over the summer after High School, I started treatment as an outpatient, before I went off to Uni that October. Sadly I didn’t settle well at uni – being away from home and missing everything that came with it didn’t help my eating, so that winter I moved back home and commuted in. This was just what I needed! I’m now recovered – I still need to gain some weight but I know it’ll come, and in the meantime I can keep on discovering and enjoying foods I never thought I could – peanut butter anyone!? (That’s a new and delicious discovery of mine, along with almond butter and walnuts
), During my recovery, I’ve developed a passion for cooking, baking and healthy eating – I’m living proof that tastes genuinely do change, and while I appreciate a good dessert or some decent chocolate, my all time favourite food has to be a giant chunk of kabocha squash, baked til squishy and covered in cinnamon! One word: MOUTHGASM!
A Food Philosophy Repeat:
I don’t deny myself anything anymore. I spent too long wasting my time counting calories and restricting foods, making them either good or bad; In my opinion, if you want to lose weight, never cut anything out – just eat a smaller portion and move about a bit more! It’s all about balance. Desserts, chocolate, none of it is off limits, to me, nor anyone else. If you eat healthily 80% of the time, there is nothing wrong with a little indulgence here and there – wouldn’t life be boring without it!? I also love experimenting with food and putting whatever is in the cupboard together to make a new meal. Sometimes it works and I get something delicious (and other times it doesn’t…but I don’t believe in waste, so it goes down the hatch anyway :p).
And just a quick note…
I wasted almost two years of my life worrying about food, restricting, being ill. Now, it’s time to start living properly, and enjoying LIFE!
